Yarn Pom Pom Snowman and Snow Woman

Do you want to build a snowman...or snow lady? (Sorry. I just couldn't help myself.) How about one out of yarn pom poms? These cute little yarn snow people are so fun and easy to make.

My kids wanted to keep theirs out to play with, but they could easily be transformed into ornaments with a loop of ribbon attached to the top. What would you do with yours? Keep reading for full instructions on making your own.

The inspiration behind this craft was the book Snowmen at Night by Carlayn Buehner. For every child who's ever wondered why their snowman just doesn't look the same the day after it has been put together, this delightful tale offers an answer. It's all about the adventures snowmen have at night while everyone is snug in their beds.

This book was so much fun to share with my kids. We just had to make a few snow people of our own. Since there is no snow on the ground right now, this was the perfect solution! Here's how to make your own pom pom snowman and snow lady.

Yarn Pom Pom Snowman and Snow Woman

Materials:

• yarn (Confession: I would have preferred white yarn, but cream was all I had. Sometimes you just have to go with what you have on hand.)
• scissors
• spatula and fork
• ribbon
• scraps of felt
• hot glue gun or craft glue
• hole punch

Directions:

1. The first step is to make your yarn pom poms. I used a spatula (large pom pom) and fork (small pom pom) to help with this step. Simply wrap layer after layer of yarn around your spatula or fork.
2. Once you've reached the desired thickness, carefully slide the yarn off your tool. Lay it down, and tightly tie a second piece of yarn around the center of the wound up piece.
3. Cut through all of the loops and spread the pieces out. Give your pom pom a "haircut" to create a fuller, more even looking pom pom. (Tip: Be careful not to cut the longer strands from the piece you tied around the middle.
4. Once both your large and small pom poms are complete, tie them together using the long center strands. Now you can trim off the excess length from those pieces.
5. Use a piece of ribbon to create a scarf. The ribbon can also be glued to the top of the snowman's head to create earmuffs.
6. Pieces of felt can be used to make the mouth, nose, and other details on your snow people. (Tip: Use a hole punch on the felt to cut perfect circles for the eyes and earmuffs.)
