Montessori-Inspired Sensorial: DIY Spring Color Sorting Activity

This DIY Montessori-Inspired Sensorial Egg Sort is perfect for practicing colors, counting, sorting, and fine motor skills. Drawing inspiration from spring, I painted the wooden eggs & flower pots in the set lovely shades of blue, pink, green, and purple. It's an easy-to-make activity that your little one will want to play with again and again. What a wonderful addition to your child's nature table, home school room, play kitchen, or pretend store! It requires only a few materials and very little time to make this set that's perfect for learning colors, sorting, counting, moving eggs to and from the flower pots, stacking the containers, pretend play, and so much more! Ready to make one for your child? Here's how...

DIY Spring Color Sort
Supplies:

  • Mod Podge
  • acrylic paint
  • sponge brushes (One for your paint and one for the Mod Podge)
  • wooden flower pots
  • wooden eggs
Directions:

1. Gather your materials. Make sure to purchase wooden eggs that fit nicely inside the flower pots.
2. Use a sponge brush to begin painting your wooden eggs and flower pots. I chose to paint the rim of the pots and leave the natural wood exposed on the bottom half. Tip: You may need to do a few coats to thoroughly cover your pieces. Let each coat of paint dry before doing the next application. One of the great things about using acrylic paint is that it dries quickly.
3. Use a second sponge brush to apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the painted pieces. This will protect them and allow them to be played with time and time again.
4. Let the wooden eggs and flower pots dry completely. Hand them over to your little one for some educational playtime!
Caleb, my youngest child, had a lot of fun working on his colors, sorting, and stacking with this cute set. I made it with him in mind, but my older kiddos had a blast with it too. I hope your little ones enjoy it as much as mine did!
Happy crafting!
