Did you know that pony beads can also be melted down? It's like getting a whole new craft item to work with! Here I've used my melted beads to make earrings and a bracelet. It's Melted Pony Bead Jewelry! They are fun to wear or give as gifts! Wouldn't these make a cute Mother's Day or birthday present? This is a great craft for the kids to get involved in--with supervision, of course, since it does involve using an oven. Are you ready to make your own melted bead jewelry? Here's how...
Melted Pony Bead Earrings
Supplies:
- pony beads
- baking pan
- oven
- E-6000 adhesive
- earring posts and backs
- card stock or Kraft paper tags (optional)
Directions:
1. Place your beads on a baking pan. You can use one with individual slots or place the beads on a cookie sheet leaving a few inches between each bead.
2. Set the oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit and bake the beads until they have melted into little circles. Let them cool for a few minutes before removing them from the pan.
3. Once your beads have completely cooled, you can add a dab of adhesive to the back of each one and attach it to an earring post.
4. Let the adhesive set completely. I usually let it sit for at least thirty minutes before picking the pieces back up. The great thing about using E-6000 is that it gives such a strong, lasting bond.
5. If you want to give your earrings to someone as a gift, put them on a piece of card stock or tag to keep them together as a set.

Supplies:
- melted pony beads (see above)
- bracelet with blanks (This one is similar to what I used.)
- E-6000 adhesive
Directions:
1. Melt several pony beads just like before. To prepare your bracelet, you may need to remove a few links to ensure an accurate fit. I wanted this to fit my daughter's wrist, so I used pliers to remove two of the blanks.
2. Use the adhesive to attach a bead to each blank disc. Allow everything to dry.
3. Wear or gift you new piece of handmade jewelry.
That's it! Now you have some gorgeous and unique pieces. It fun to try a mix of different colors as you're making these! It was interesting to see that some colors melted a little quicker than others. If you do try this craft for yourself, be sure to share it with me in the comments. I'd love to see what you come up with.

This is so cute! I had no idea those beads could be melted down!
ReplyDeleteYes, and they melt into a nice, uniform circle. I did find that some colors melted faster than others.
DeleteDo you have to spray the pan or anything or do they just come right off the pan after cooling?
DeleteHi, Ashley! Great question! No, you do not have to use any spray. They pop right off the pan after cooling down. I don't let them sit too long--just long enough to be cool to the touch.
DeleteOh, and it may also be interesting to know that some colors melted quicker than others. I hope you have fun trying out this idea!
DeleteCan I use wax paper instead of kraft paper.
DeleteHi, Amanda. The kraft paper was for the display card for the finished jewelry. You can see the earrings mounted to it.

I love this idea, it sounds so easy! I have loads of pony beads laying around.
ReplyDeleteWow! How did you come up with that?! So, I have a question. When you just take them out of the oven,...would it be possible to make a hole in the center of them? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteHmmm...that's a good question. I let them sit and harden before messing with them since I wanted them to be perfect little circles. I'm curious to go back and try that out though. Let me know if you've already given it a try. Otherwise, I'll do it and keep you posted.
DeleteClever idea - great project for young teens, too
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! My daughter would love doing this :)

DeleteSeriously LOVE this!!!! Thanks for linking up to Link Party Palooza!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! That is such a huge compliment coming from you. I've been a big fan of your blog for years now.
DeleteThis is so cool! Looks simple enough too! I will save and try making these soon!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried placing 3 or 4 beads next to each other (in a circle) in the oven? Would they melt together or just easily break apart when they cool off? That would be really cool if they swirled together.
ReplyDeleteI actually did try that. I melted some together to form a flower. They do not break apart. I was able to attach the melted pony bead flowers onto snap clips to make hair accessories for my daughter. I may try to get a picture and include that in the post. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThese look like a very fun craft! Do they have a strong plastic smell when melting?
ReplyDeletePlease tell me how long it takes to melt these at 250 degrees. Thanks for the cool idea!
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on the beads. I've noticed some melt quicker than others. Most only take between 5-15 minutes so keep a close eye on them.
DeleteHas anyone tried melting them directly in the blank disk?
ReplyDeleteI would not recommend melting the beads directly in the blanks of the bracelet. The beads do not stick to metal without an adhesive and you could even damage the bracelet.
ReplyDeleteI've attempted making the earrings several times before at a different temp because i was told 350-400....i've tried all those ranges and its just been fail after fail. nothing is uniform. some melted and some just seemed to fry and bubble...i'm gonna give the lower temperature a shot and see if it helps any!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! Definitely lower that temperature. Try it this way and let me know how it goes. :) I discovered that the lighter colored beads melted a little better. Try some lighter colors, too.
DeleteI love the look of these! Is there any odor to the melting plastic?
ReplyDeletehad fu melting the beads, used for other ideas such as buttons for craft projects
ReplyDeleteWhat size earring post are these on ?
ReplyDeleteI love the idea, but I tried this in my oven, granted it's not the greatest oven there is, but I did it for about 25 mins and I took them out, threw them away. I will try again, in a toaster oven, when I can afford one. It could just be me, my oven, whatever. I don't know.
ReplyDeleteLighter colored beads seem to melt better than darker colors. I think it has something to do with the dye. Try some light colored ones and see if that helps.
DeleteWhat size do you think they melt down to? I was looking at the disc sizes on the bracelets and didn’t know. Thanks
