Fizzy Dough: Sensory Dough Series

It is time for July's installment of the 12 Months of Sensory Dough Series! Each month 11 fellow bloggers and I are sharing our playtime adventures with dough. Last month we made Ice Cream Dough. This month things are getting exciting (and messy) with some Fizzy Dough!

Ingredients:
Dough
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water
Spray bottle
  • vinegar and water solution
Directions:
Mix the baking soda, flour, and water together to form a dough. Pour equal parts vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Let the kids play with the dough and spray bottle. Squirting the diluted vinegar onto the dough will cause it to bubble and fizz. Not only is this a great sensory activity, but it is also a great opportunity for a mini science lesson on chemical reactions. Ask your kiddos why they think the dough reacts that way.

Extension: Fill a second spray bottle with just water to squirt onto the dough. Compare and discuss the results.

Tip: This educational recipe for play gets messy, so cover your surface with parchment paper or a tablecloth for easy clean-up.
