Edible Play Dough: Sensory Dough Series

It's time for March's installment of the 12 Months of Sensory Dough Series! Each month 11 fellow bloggers and I will share with you our playtime adventures with dough. Last month was Cloud Dough.  This month is Edible Play Dough!

I have been keeping my dough recipes pretty simple, but edible dough presented a new challenge.  I have a son who has a severe dairy allergy, but I wanted it to be edible for him too.  This dough recipe is still simple enough to be made from things readily found in your kitchen, but it is also allergy friendly.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup dairy-free margarine (If you don't have to worry about milk allergies, regular margarine or butter works too.)
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
mixture with 3 tablespoons water and 2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder  (Make sure the only ingredient on the container is cocoa.)

Directions:
Mix both kinds of sugar in with the room temperature margarine.  In a separate bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons of water and two teaspoons of baking powder.  Add this mixture to the sugar mixture.  Mix in the remaining ingredients.  If the dough seems too sticky, add a little extra flour.  Once the dough has been mixed thoroughly, you can spoon some out for the kids to play with.

I put out cookie cutters and rolling pins for the kids too.  You might notice chocolate on little faces! This dough is really tasty!

Here's the best part...
You can use the extra dough that the kids aren't playing with to make cookies. Drop spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Let the cookies sit a few minutes before removing them from the cookie sheet. The kids will have delicious cookies to enjoy after they are done playing

    1. Thanks! The cookies really were delicious. I made sure to reserve some of the dough just for that purpose.
